Beaver
Springs is a small borough in Pennsylvania that is known for its
quaint small-town atmosphere. The Beaver Springs Dollar General is a
shopping destination for many local residents.
“It is a small rural store, and customers purchase all their grocery and seasonal items there,” said Josh Allison, district manager. “Dollar General in Beaver Springs provides a convenient, shopable and in-stock store, which has been key in driving consistent sales volume.”
Every customer is treated like a celebrity when
they come into the store. One was a genuine Hollywood star. Davy
Jones, the late musician of the Monkees fame who settled in
neighboring Beavertown, was a frequent customer.
“He
was very nice, and we all knew he loved cats,” said Sales Associate
Tara Young. “He was here mostly to buy things for his pets.”
Employees
at the store remember Davy as a friendly customer who enjoyed talking
with neighbors.
“One day I had a bad cold and Davy was telling me what medicines I should take,” said Ashley Greenaway, lead sales associate. “He seemed to be a really caring, down- to-earth person. That’s what was so great about him; he was just like everyone else.”
Assistant Store Manager Kristin Wray
saw excitement in customers when they met Davy. “He would just give
a little laugh and be glad to brighten someone’s spirits.”
Davy
Jones passed away unexpectedly in Florida leaving behind fond
memories of his visits to the Beaver Springs Dollar General. News
reports say he was last seen in town shopping at Dollar General
chatting with neighbors.
“I
was so upset when I heard the news that he had passed away in
Florida,” said Sales Associate Anna Pester.
Neighboring Beavertown, where Jones lived, is known for its Hillbilly Fever Days celebration that is held in late summer. The festival features hillbilly golf using
sticks and walnuts, entertainment and much more.
Beavertown is also
known for its unique New Year’s Eve festivities which is
highlighted by the dropping of a styrofoam stuffed Beaver.
Store
Manager Janice never questioned why Davy Jones chose to call a small
community like Beavertown one of his homes. “Those of us who had
the pleasure of meeting him know he wanted a quiet place off the
beaten path, and that is the very definition of Beavertown.”
