Store Manager: Sally Weatherington
District Manager: Tracy Edgington

The city of Metropolis lies along the Ohio River in Southern Illinois. It was named Metropolis in 1839, almost 100 years before Superman came to life in comic books. While the name may conjure visions of sky rises and subways, Metropolis has a picturesque hometown feel.

In 1972, DC Comics declared Metropolis the official "Hometown of Superman," and the same year the Illinois State Legislature passed Resolution 572, declaring the same.

A 15-foot statue of the man of steel stands watch over the downtown square, while a bronze statue of Lois Lane is just a few blocks away. The local newspaper is appropriately named the Metropolis Planet.

Sales at the Dollar General in Metropolis soar through the sky during the Superman Celebration held every year on the second Saturday in June. Thousands of tourists flock to the downtown area to celebrate their favorite caped crusader. Costume contests, celebrity guests and the chance to mingle with fellow fans in the Super Museum are all part of the festivities.

District Manager Tracy Edgington has seen growth faster than a speeding bullet from Store Manager Sally Weatherington and her team in Metropolis. The store is now leading the district in sales increase over last year at more than 15 percent year-to-date.

“Sally has a great team that cares about the success of the store,” said Tracy. “Sally involves everyone in the processes of the store and assigns projects to her management team to help in their development.”

The Metropolis Dollar General team also channels the town mascot’s superhuman hearing and vision to listen to their customers and meet their needs.

Sally’s secret to her team’s success derives from a commitment to simple business principles. She says “great customer service, a clean and clutter-free store and using your team’s strengths in the right places” all contribute to creating a great shopping destination.

The Metropolis store doesn’t let in-stocks be its kryptonite. The team has recently achieved great improvements in keeping the sales floor stocked for its customer’s convenience.

“The store team understands the importance of getting the merchandise to the correct location now, and I am very proud of what they have accomplished as a team with in-stocks since their inventory,” said Tracy.

With a goal to be heroes to their customers, the Metropolis Dollar General is going up, up and away!
